- AbstractThe methods for establishing spatial pattern of individuals in biological population were mostly developed in ecology and fitocenology. Therefore these methods give us useful results in the herbs and grass populations. In the forests, where the distances between the trees are much larger, the applications of these methods are sometimes connected with high costs or measurement troubles. The main goal of this analysis is to establish which methods that have been used in mathematical ecology, are suitable in grown-up forest stands. The objects of investigation are two sample plots size 0,25ha and 0,80ha located in the optimum phase of the virgin forest Rajhenauski Rog in Slovenia. The result of analysis showed that the methods based on frequency distribution according to number of trees at random placed quadrates (of equal size) in the stand (sample plot) require a lot of work and give information's only, if the trees are arranged randomly or non-randomly. The methods that based on the distances between the nearest neighbours and distances between randomly selected points to the nearest individual, give us better information about arrangement pattern. The method called nearest neighbour technique, which is widely applied in plant ecology, has not give satisfactory results, especially if the trees are dispersed in the cluster. In the analysis the new method that is founded on distances between the tree to the three nearest neighbour trees was applied. The ratio between mean distance and expected mean distance and the ratio between standard deviation and expected standard deviation of random distributions gives us well explanation about spatial pattern of trees.
