- AbstractThe project “Dynamische Waldtypisierung Steiermark (FORSITE)” aims to characterize the suitability of tree species mixtures for forest sites considering future conditions due to climate change in Styria. The potentials and risks of endemic and non-endemic tree species are to be described and the adaption of forest management related to climate change will be derived. Therefore, the generation of an areal data set related to soil properties including water, heat and nutrient balances is essential to characterize the resources for tree growth. A comprehensive information on unconsolidated rock substrate and the subjacent lithologies is essential for the interpretation of the genesis of the pedosphere. Based on in situ characterization of the substrate at more than 1800 sites and laboratory analyses of 240 substrate samples (grain size, total mineral and clay mineral components, and petrographical description) an areal substrate distribution (map) was derived. These data were used for the regionalization of hydraulic and nutrient substrate properties. The herein presented research focus on the regionalization of the porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity based on the grain size distribution and bulk density of the substrate. These values are important for the areal modelling of the soil water balance and in further consequence for the modelling of tree growth.
