- AbstractSlovenia is a country situated in the southern part of central Europe. Slovenia is small in surface but topographically
quite diverse, as there meet four large European geographical regions: European Alps, the karstic Dinaric Alps, the Pannonian plain and the Mediterranean area. Thus the country is at the junction of three important geotectonic units: Alps to the north, the Dinaric Alps to the south and the Pannonian Basin to the east. Most of Slovenia have
a carbonate ground, where an extensive subterranean system has developed. Slovenia is bordered by Austria in the north and Hungary in the northeast. In the east and south it has border with Croatia and in the west with Italy. Till the Worldwar I Slovenia was part of Austro-Hungarian empire. Then its major part was part to Yugoslavia till 1991. With dissolution of Yugoslavia Slovenia became an independent state and in 2004 it became part of EU.
