Bitterlich's method of smoothmess in correspondence tiwth the reproduction of the stem form is discussed. The Spline interpolation, minimizing the total curvature, complies with the Bitterlich interpolation (which is empirically carried out with aid of a steel wire) Roesner (1973) and Sloboda (1975) give an algorithm for the Spline function; the closeness of fit is represented by. Possible applications are given: 2.0 and 3.0 are exemplary, whereas illustrations 3a, 3b, 4a through 4e are directly displayed on the stem. Illus. 3a + 3b represented the Bitterlich verification of the goal of fit. The practicality of this method is apparent in 3.0, indicating a connection with the total stem method of Schöpfer (1976).
