- AbstractForests located in the vicinity of cities are expected to meet numerous multi-functional demands: They must perform a great variety of complex tasks such as the supply of fresh air, the fulfilment of recreational purposes and the protection of living space. No doubt, it is imperative to solve conflicting interests and to guarantee that the multiple functions of forest as supplier of fresh air, as air filter and water storage medium will be of high quality. As regards the number and regional distribution of the forests and the usability of recreational forests, the capital towns Vienna and Budapest show quite similar structures. The so called "Natural resource project" between both countries focuses on the reafforestation of rarely wooded areas in the Pannonian region. It offers the opportunity to compare various conflict - solving - methods at international level. Principles of the management of recreational forests still remain to be worked out. The Viennese follow-up project is called "Management of Recreational Forests". Because of the existing actual recreational potential Vienna's forest areas are classified according to the intensity of exploitation of the forest path network, information facilities and connection to public and private transport. Out of these facts a management plan has been developed. It includes all parameters which are relevant to the recreational value of a forest. The main result of the whole process is the maintainance of conflict-free recreational forests for both metropolities. Furthermore, the process aims at developing environmental information programs for the citizens and it is still going on.
