The aim of the presented sub-projekt was the construction of a digital soil map of the project area. This area comprises the Marchfeld, situated east of Vienna. The four chosen districts have been surveyed in the field by K. Schwarzecker and the results were edited as classical soil maps by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The construction of the digital soil map comprises the introduction of all essential information which are included in the classical soil maps, both as graphics and textual interpretation, which have been introduced into the Geographic Information System (GIS). Furthermore, the comprehensive data of the soil quality network programs of Austrian provinces form also part of the data base. As a result of the sub-project a complete layer of soil forms for the whole project-area is available: it can be combined with any form of topographic map, e.g. with an aero-photograph. Furtheron, the soil forms can be summarized to pedological units, as shown in the map in Fig. 1. Table 1 shows the areas corresponding to these units. The soil maps and soil data resulting from this sub-project are used in other sub-projects for the respective purpose.
