The natural forest communities are dominated by spru7ce-fir sites, particularly Luzulo-Abietetum (47% of the forested area), Homogyno-Piceetum (30%), and Oxali-Abietetum (22%). The potential species composition of the spruce and fir is estimated at 60% and 30% respectively. The actual species composition is 84% (spruce) and 4% (fir). Eleven percent of the forest area is covered by larch, which is estimated to naturally occupy 3% of the area. Beech and maple, which naturally comprise approximately 5% of the area, have almost disappeared (less than 1%). The distribution of vegetation types, site units, tree-species composition, age structure and habitat types are discussed in this chapter.
