According to the Austrian forest soil monitoring network the magnesium- supply of forest soils varies on a vast scale, but is generally sufficient. Mg- deficiency mainly occurs in podzols, particularly on granite. Onthe Ostrongs mountains (Lower Austria) a forest damage area with symptoms of Mg- deficiency, foliar fertilization with Mg was successful. Soil application of dolomite powder resulted in a remarkable increase of base saturation and pH in the Ah-horizon after only one year, but no changes in the crown condition of declining trees occured. In the Glein-valley (Styria), another forest damage area with similar symptoms foliar Mg-fertilization was ineffective, however. Among a great number of fertilizer substances and types of application classic multinutrient fertilizers in combination with Mg-Ca- carbonates had the best results, particularly with young stands.
