The protected "Conventwald" in the forest district of Kirchzarten, east of Freiburg lies in the "mountain" height class (700 - 860 metres above sea level) on the southern edge of the middle Black Forest (forest Growth District 3/09 middle Black Forest between the Kinzig and the Dreisam). It has an Atlantic mountain climate (average annual temperature 7.3°C, average annual precipitation 1490 mm). In the forestry site classification idex this height level is classed as a forest zone in the mountain Beech-Fir forest area. The southern exposure however has the effect of greater summer dryness and lower air humidity than in other comparable Black Forest situations.
