Abstract
An investigation was carried out to examine the possibility of determining the bark volume on standing trees in different fast-growing species (Populus x euramericana, P. deltoides, P. nigra, Pinus radiata, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globulus, E. dalrympleana, E. x trabutii). This type of assessment can be made either by Grosenbaugh's equations or by calculating multiple regressions which give the stem volume as a function of b.h. diameter and height, provided the ratio over bark/under bark diameter is constant. In the present investigation, the two above-mentioned methods were adopted for fast-growing species not referred to in literature. Of the two methods tested the multiple regression proved more suitable, showing also lower operational diffculties. Particularly good results were obtained for the three poplar species. However, this method seems valid for determinig the bark volume in a plantation, proving on the contrary rather inaccurate for assessments on single trees, especially eucalypts.
