- AbstractThe interdisciplinary project of the Federal Forest Research Centre ("Achenkirch altitude profiles") was started in 1990. The current investigations continue the research work undertaken between 1983 and 1990 in the course of the "Zillertal altitude profile" project. The results presented were derived from this project. With the help of "integrated monitoring" the very sensitive Alpine limestone area was described and evaluated with regard to established air quality criteria and limiting values. Apart from the use of well known bioindicators, new methods were tested for their suitability to describe the present environmental situation. The physiological condition of the trees was described by means of biochemical and physiological parameters that permit the quantification of stress. Additionally, the interdisciplinary approach and the evaluation of its results are intended to provide additional knowledge on high-altitude and protection forests as well as on the dynamics of forest ecosystems and forest pastures. The data on the pollution input and the characteristic stress parameters are intended as a contribution to future legislation.
