- AbstractLarge landslide-prone areas affedted by slow movement represent a complex and often poorly understood phenomenon. Their characteristics are difficult to determine and the prediction of their behavouir is a delicate task. Everywhere in the world they can strike man and severley damage constuction and residential sites. Therefore, in order to resolve such types of problems, it is indispensable to initiate exchanges of views and experiences, on an international level, concerning current methods and techniques and outstanding new developments. Following those of Kyoto (1972) and Tokyo (1977) in Japan, of New Delhi (1980) in India and of Toronto (1984) in Canada, this 5th International Symposium on Landslides aims at constituting a multidisciplinary forum for civil and geotechnical engineers, geologists, directors in charge of administrative services and all scientists, researchers, teachers or practitioners involved in problems of slope instability. The considerable developments during last two decades in the investigation, study and analysis techniques as well as in the stabilization of landslides, clearly show that such exchanges are profitable and lead to reduction in damage and risks caused unstable natural slopes, although constructions exposed to such types of danger are always more numerous. Thus, these exchanges represent an increasing concern on the part of a public which seeks more safety and an efficacious prevention of these dangers. The six themes selected for the symposium include most of the scientific concerns of specialists working in this field. They range from the identification of instability phenomena to the definition of parameters, in particular through site measurements. They include landslide modelization, forecasting of their behaviour and the applicable means to stabilize them. Finally they deal with problems of assessment of the risks involved and present the main characteristics of the unstable formations in the zone of the alpine arc and their impact on the exposed communities. The presentation of the proceedings of this symposium is also based on these six themes. For each of them, a general report treats the State-of-the-Art and gives a synthesis of the proposed contributions; then two or three special lectures deal with particular subjects in relation to this theme. In the case of Theme 6, concerning the instability phenomena in the zone of the alpine arc, the five main countries involved will be presented. The general reports and special lectures are presented at the beginning of each theme, except those which unfortunately were not received at the moment of publishing; they will be included in Volume 3, along with the discussions. Volume 1 presents the contributions pertaining to Theme 1 : Geology and selection of parameters, 2: Monitoring methods and field measurements and 3: .........
