The purpose of this book is to describe the silvicultural systems in common use. We shall be concerned with the techniques of each system, including the conduct of felling, tending, and regeneration. We will also examine the application of each system and this is closely connected with the requirements of forest management. Forest management teaches us the great economic advantages of regular sustained yields over intermittent or spasmodic yields, and the ideal of the normal growing stock has been created with the object of ensuring future sustained yields. This must be kept in mind when applying at this ideal. So, we will consider the general framework of the scheme including the division of the forest, the allotment of areas for felling, and also yield regulation as they affect silvicultural, protection, and harvesting produce.
