- AbstractThis paper presents a prototype version of a model for simulation of forest establishment, based on natural and/or artifical regeneration. The model is relatively ambitious in its attempt to model the biological processes involved in natural regeneration, although most of the processes so far are modeled in a rather simplified fashion. The model quantifies natural regeneration from the creation and diversification of buds into vegetative and flower buds. It further models flowering, seed production, seed maturation, seed dispersal and mortality of seeds. Next step is germination of seeds and establishment of seedlings and finally growth and survival of small plants up to a well established regenerated stand. The model is for now implemented on Win32 platform (Windows 95 and Windows NT). Required data are stored and read from a relational database. Output is written to the same database. The user has to supply information regarding regeneration options for the stand, which includes amount of residual trees on the site, site preparation, planting and control of upcoming brush.
