This paper presents the preliminary results of measurements and assessments of 9 IUFRO provenances of Abies alba (Mill.) at ages of two-, three- , four-, five-, six-, eight and eleven years from seed in 1982. The Dutch research is very limited with only 9 provenances from Germany, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and Rumania. No significant differences in height growth between the provenances were showed at two-, three-, four-, five and six-year-old plants in the nursery and also not at age eight and eleven years in the trial. All provenances showed a very slow growth with a small variation between the provenances. However best growth showed the provenances Avrig from Rumania, Donja Stupcanica from Yugoslavia and Donon from France. The German provenaces Siegsdorf and Kempten showed poorest growth. Flushing behaviour of all provenances was almost the same. Only a very small variation in flushing time was showed between the provenances. In the nursery all provenances showed excellent survival and proved to be all sufficiently winter hardy. In the trial however survival varied from moderate to poor, mainly caused by drought. The German provenance Waldshut showed best survival, while the German provenance Siegsdorf and the Rumanian provenance Avrig showed poorest survival.
