Investigations on the incidence of Melampsorella cariophyllacearum in different Regions of Italy have been carried out. The severity of the diseases, influenced by the microclimatic conditions, increases from forests in Southern and Central Italy to forests in the Alps. In the Scrigno valley, a correlation between the incidence of the pathogen and the distance of the trees from the river have been observed. Damages include dead of young trees and wood alterations in the old trees caused by the cankers on the trunks.
