- AbstractDistribution of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) damage caused by Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet was studied along the pollution gradient between Monchegorsk, Russia and western Lapland, Finland. Standwise damage was noticed in four out of fifteen areas in northern Finland and Kola. Treewise damage was observed in eleven areas both in Kola and northern Finland. According to branch analysis, the fungus was distributed widely over the studied areas, but no signs of any systematic epidemics were observed. The number of the sample branches was, however, too low to reliably reflect the infection history of Scots pine. Average areawise damage correlated significantly and negatively with the temperature sum and the modelled SO2, but not with the elevation of the plot, the distance from Monchegorsk or monthly May-September precipitation, number of pines cankered by Lachnellula pini (Brunch.) Dennis, lesioned by Peridermium pini (Pers.) Lev. or attacked by Tomicus spp.
