Variation among Scandinavian Gremmeniella abietina populations studied by in condidiospore length and septation, colonization rate of host tissue and minisatellite DNA, clearly showed that there are two distinct types. These types seem to be ecologically related. One type attacks trees below 2m in areas with cold climate and heavy snowcover during winter. The other type cause damage in trees of all sizes and is mainly found in the South. No separation among the isolates was found in relation to geography or host species.
