- AbstractNeedle trace method (NTM) was successfully used to verify retrospectively the existence of a past, but well documented, 5-year needle cast epidemic caused by Lophodermella sulcigena (Rostr.) v. Hoehnel in 1977-1981 in a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand. Fourteen 30-year-old Scots pines were felled for needle retention stuies in the autumn of 1993 in the Halkivaha stand in Loppi, southern Finland. NTM revealed significantly less needle sets during the epidemics in the seven diseased trees than in the seven healthy ones. The needle retention level of the diseased trees did not recover to the level of the healthy trees during ten post-epidemical years.
