- AbstractNeedles of spruce species (Picea spec.) can be infected by an ascomycete, which seems to belong to the taxon Lophodermium macrosporum (Hartig) Rehm or Lirula macrospora (Hartig) Darker. These names are considered to be synonyms. We have investigated many fresh samples of this fungus from various European and north American sources. Simultaneously the information from the literature since the first description of the fungus by Hartig (1874) have been collected and compared with our findings. The results show very clearly that the fungal material named Lophodermium (Lirula) macrosporum can be considered as a complex and must be separated into at least three different types (species?), which differ in their morphology, size of teleomorph and anamorph structures and probably also in their life cycles.
