- AbstractThe Norwegian monitoring programme for forest damage has nineteen plots in spruce forests in Norway. During a 3-5 years period litterfall from these plots has been analysed for occurrence of fungi. In addition, on most plots fungal endophytes have been isolated taken from green spruce needles from the 7th and 15th whorls. Lophodermium piceae is the most common fungus on spruce needles from litterfall and is also most frequently isolated from green needles. The frequency of this fungus in the litterfall varies during the year, fewer needles with signs of infection are found in the summer than in late autumn. Tiarosporella parca is less common than Lophodermium piceae and is rarely isolated from green needles. Fewer needles with signs of Tiarosporella parca infection are found in the litterfall during the summer than in late autumn. Two plots show a conspicuous low incidence of Lophodermium piceae and a rather high incidence of Tiarosporella parca. One of these plots is affected by air pollution, while on the other plot several factors may be of significance.
