Needles were collected from Norway spruce in the south of Sweden. Lophodermium piceae and Tiarosporella parca were recorded as cultures from green needles and as fruitbodies from brown, fallen needles. Sclerophoma pithyophila was recorded only as cultures, whereas Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii was recorded only as fruitbodies. The best overview of the needle fungi was achieved by using both methods at the same time; long-term collection of fallen needles with fruitbodies sampled at intervals, as well as culturing mycelia from green needles.
