Damage caused by many insects and diseases which affect forest resources is highly visible. Therefore, surveys designed to monitor forest condition with respect to insect and disease damage lend themselves to use of remote sensing. In the United States, the most widely used monitoring system is aerial sketch mapping. Aerial photographs using both color and CIR emulsions are used for applications where more detailed information is required. Video imagery, airborne and satellite scanners have been evaluated and offer promise for use in the future. Geographic information systems are currently used in several forest regions to store, analyze and display data collected through remote sensing and other means and to integrate these data with other resource information to support pest management decisions. These techniques are applicable to other countries of the world where there is a need to monitor damage caused by forest insects and diseases.
