The traditional process of producing maps is time consuming and expensive. Although the demand for topographic and thematic information is increasing worldwide. So for many years strong efforts have been made to optimize the proceedure of mapping. The paper gives an overview of the state of the art in mapping and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different technologies and sensors. It is stated that the new technology which integtrates satellite imagery, analytical photogrammetry and GIS will offer new possibilities for mapping which will be a challenge to future research.
