- AbstractEquations studied by NGI (Norges Geotekniskes Institutt) to predict extreme avalanche run-out distance (LIED, 1980) has been tested against an Italian Alps avalanche sample (River Cordevole basin). The equations, based on topographic parameters only, are obtained from "regression analysis", if applied to regions far from Norway, their use needs proper checks considering local conditions. Huge North American and Swiss avalanche samples have already been tested with good results (Martinelli Jr., 1987). The different snow quality of the Italian sample asked for a reelaboration of the datas which led to new equations based on the same structure of the original ones. The present paper explains the algorythm used it shows the new results obtained.
