- AbstractObservations on marker genes are indispensable for the verification of population genetic theory. Selected examples of pronounced trait variation in trees controlled by single genes are presented; such genetic traits as marked leaf forms, red pigmentation, the content of secondary compounds, prezygotic incompatibilities, and isoenzymes may be tested for their eligibility as gene markers. Isoenzymes possess a variety of advantages. The procedure of identifying marker genes consists of five steps. These steps are integrated into five methods of analysis. The inferences which may be drawn from the application of these methods vary in scope.
