- AbstractMonoclonal antibodies were raised to proteins precipitated from extracts of rhizomorph powder and also to specific proteins for Armillaria mellea and Armillaria ostoyae excised from SDS gels. The monoclonal antibodies raised have been screened against antigens from all European species of Armillaria and against antigens from other fungal genera (including the most common wood rotting fungi). Monoclonal antibodies have been obtained which are i) genus specific ii) Armillaria ostoyae specific iii) Armillaria mellea specific and iv) Armillaria ostoyae/Armillaria gallica specific when screened against extracts from culture grown material and when tested against extracts from naturally infected wood. The three species Armillaria ostoyae, Armillaria mellea and Armillaria gallica can therefore be detected and identified. Species identification with ELISA or dip-stick assays directly from infected wood requires a total time of under 24 hours, considerably shorter than the 6-8 weeks needed for isolation and identification with cultural compatibility tests.
