Abstract
Four intersterility groups were discovered among the Armillaria isolates in Hokkaido. Mating tests were carried out by all pairwise combinations with three single spore isolates from each basidiome. The period of basidiomes played no significant role to the distinction of intersterility groups. Group I and IV were observed on the decaying roots or stem in living hosts, whereas II and III were discovered in decaying stems or trunks, sometimes on the soils. Intersterility groups can be distinguished by colony types and rhizomorph characteristics. On the basis of mating behaviors and cultural characteristics, the intersterility groups of Armillaria isolates in Hokkaido can be separated into 4 groups.
