Genetic Variation in F-Group Isolates of Heterobasidion annosum Occurring in Italy : Root and Butt Rots

F type isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were collected from different part of peninsula: Alpine region, Northern Apennines and Southern Apennines. Genomic DNA was extracted from isolates and genetic variability was studied using the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. DNA polymorphisms was detected in isolates originating from different geographical regions. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that F-group is more closely related to European and North American S groups than European P group. The reasons behind the DNA polymorphisms in F-group is discussed in relation to the past and present host species occurrence in Italy.
