Data on spruces from the Swedish National Forest Survey was used to generate two sets of trees, one healthy and one with decay at breast height. One healthy and one decayed tree, of similar age, site productivity class, regional position, altitude, diameter in 1954, and periodic growth from 1954 to 1963, were paired, in all 338 pairs. The difference in relative diameter growth between the groups increased with time. There was a highly significant difference in diameter growth between healthy and decayed trees within pairs.
