A major concern among forest owners throughout Europe is that the profitability of forestry is decreasing alarmingly due to increasing costs, and diminishing returns from the timber market. On the other hand, forest owners often lack the necessary information on the financial consequences of forestry activites to make rational decisions. These problems are addressed by the EU Concerted Action project "Monitoring the Socio-Economic Situation of European Farm Forestry - MOSEFA". The project is coordinated by the European Forest Institute and its objectives are to - make the existing experiences and expertise on farm forestry accountancy data networks generally available - outline approaches for an international socio-economic scheme of statistics on farm forestry - develop a common methodological frame-work/guidelines for collecting socio-economic data of farm forestry enterprises - identify the most essential research needs and prepare further research activities at the Community level on this subject. These proceedings are an output of the first MOSEFA Workshop held in Zeist, the Netherlands in August 1997. They give an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the cost accountancy in farm forest enterprises in various Europe countries, and methodological issues related to this topic.
