The driving forces for wood demand are population growth and economic welfare. As we enter the 3rd millennium, a considerable increase in the demand for wood products is expected. At the same time, however, overall forest cover is decreasing. Many efforts will be required to overcome the problem of decreasing available resources and an increasing number of consumers. In March 1996 the EFI arranged a seminar to review new challenges that will need to be met by the forest industries sector. These seminar proceedings address these issues both from an economic and an environmental point of view.
