The dissemination of reliable, precise and easily accessible information on European forestry is one of the main tasks of the European Forest Institute (EFI). The main purpose of this working paper is: (i) to describe the situation in information technology in relation to European forestry, (ii) to map the current situation in forestry information in order to discover the appropriate niche for the EFI with respect to information services, taking fully into account the need to avoid an overlap with other international organizations and (iii) to describe those information services which have already been developed by the EFI.
