This work aims at identifying potential biological variables which are practical and can be incorporated into existing integrated monitoring (IM) areas. Descriptions of some of the indicators already in use were included to provide perspective. The survey concentrates on physiological and biochemical processes that could be used to detect and document qualitative and quantitative effects of stressors such as chemical immission or UV- radiation on soil fauna, microflora and enzyme activity; fine roots and mycorrhizae; decomposition; biochemical and physiological activity of needles/leaves. It does not presume to be an analysis of specific techniques but rather an exposure to those approaches with potential biomonitoring applications.
