Abstract
In a rare plain forest relict located nearby the city of Mestre and escaped from direct and indirect men's aggressions, several specific surveys have been held to gather information about structure and functionally in perspective of an attempt of environmental recovery. By means of field analysis and indirect evaluations obtained from suitable simulation models, it has been possible to determine the climatic, pedologic and hydropedologic state. The structure of the wood stand (that is chiefly composed by hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) and common oak (Quercus pedunculata) has been quantified throughout the determination of canopy coverage and the main dendrologic parameters in sample plots and transects. There has been also an attempt to assess the ecosystem steady-state through the diversity and complexity analysis of the nemoral phytocenosis. The result has been a negative diagnosis that indicates a severe degradation of this wood stand, slowly approaching a functionality break down.
