Assessment of Increment in Permanent Monitoring Plots Established to Determine the Effects of Air Pollution on Forests : Assessment of Increment in Permanent Monitoring Plots Established to Determine the Effects of Air Pollution on Forests
Increment measurements are an important part of the assessment of the health of European forests. In many countries, there is a long history of increment measurements, but these are not always suitable for incorporation into studies of the impact of pollution on forests, having been established for other purposes. Unlike assessments of defoliation, increment measurements provide a potentially objective and reproducible method of assessing tree condition in plots across Europe. However, problems exist with the consistency of methods between and within different countries. This volume describes the efforts already being made in a number of European countries to assess increment and details how these can be related to other studies of forest condition. A final section gives recommendations for the assessment of increment in permanent monitoring plots.
