Abstract
An investigation of the carbon content of the organic matter of 37 surface soils secured from seven different experiment stations has been made by a modified rapid dry combustion method devised for the simultaneous determination of soil organic matter and organic carbon. Similar data also have been secured for corresponding sub- and sub-surface soils. The data presented show that the use of the generally accepted conventional factor uniformly gives low results. The Percentage of organic carbon in the surface soils varied from 30.20 to 56.27, the general average being 49.26, which is about 9 points below the accepted value.
