The primary problem in thinning is to find harvesting methods that combine a good economic and silvicultural result. The NSR project "Multi-tree processing and light technology in first thinning" dealt with two lines of development: multi-tree processing and the use of light and less expensive machinery for first thinning. The project was composed of four parts. Testing and analytical methods were used in the parts "Multi-tree processing", "Light technology machines and methods" and "Evaluation of thinning methods". Brainstorming sessions were used to collect ideas for automation in harvesting. Detailed results of the projects have been presented in the publication series of the participating research institutes.
