Abstract
A sample survey was carried out on 8 percent of the total number of machine owners with assigsments in the Swedish forest enterprises. They owned, altogether, approximately 10 percent of all machines in operating during the logging season 1985/86. In order to strengthen the survey data, 37 machine owners were visited as representatives for identified categories of machine ownership. Almost one fourth of the machines used by forest companies in logging season 1985/86 are EO machines, some 40 percent are own by contractors, of which 35 are one-man firms. Close to 15 percent of the contractors are partners and approximately 50 percent have employees. In the report these owner categories are described in terms of background data, reason for becoming a machine owner, working hours, work content, community and mutual connexion, organizational problems and advantages, social security, economical security, contacts with other categories of forest employees, changing extent of the business, the physical/technical environment in the machine, the machine owners health situation.
