Abstract
This paper presents a survey of the community-owned forest in Sweden. Data have been gathered in the form of a total survey using a postal questionnaire, supplemented by an analysis of non-responses. The data was collected during 1986-87 and covers the period 1983-85. The total area of community-owned pure forest land is estimated at 341 000 ha, distributed throughout 82% of the 284 municipalities in the country. Fellings amount to 1 million forest cubic metres and the net income is estimated at around 95 million SEK. Most of the work in community forests is by non-municipal employees and in comparison with Swedish silviculture in general, twice as high number of working days per hectar are used. Many community forests are run without a definite goal and for those municipalities with a clear goal consideration of the needs of outdoor life, building programmes and nature conservancy are most frequent.
