Abstract
After 1964 and 1994 the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Mammalogy will be held in Vienna for the third
time. Vienna is still the heart of mammal research in Austria, where it is in focus at three universities, at the Austrian
Academy of Sciences and at the Natural History Museum. In 1994 Friederike Spitzenberger raised the hope that the
annual meeting would help to boom mammalogy in Austria and foster the exchange between mammalogists of Eastern and Western Europe. A prerequisite of increased communication on an international scale is English as the scientific language. As a consequence, this annual meeting is the first one in the history of the German Society of Mammalogy which has English as the official language although it takes place in a German speaking country. We see this decision as a strategy to increase the internationality of our society and to attract colleagues from abroad.
