Abstract
The incidence of self-sterility has been investigated in more than eight hundred species of flowering plants. The occurrence of self-sterility in various orders is based on the author's investigations and such information as is available in the scattered literature on the subject. Self-sterility is widespread among the various orders, but is more prevalent in the more specialized groups and especially in the orders which in clude only or primarily herbaceous plants. The greater incidence of self-sterlity among the herbaceous species and self-sterility must be a relatively recent inovation in sexual reproduction.
