Abstract
There are still many unclear areas in our attempts to understand why selfing sometimes evolves, but why most plants and animals are not complete selfers. Unusually in modern biology, theses are areas in which studies of plants may lead the way. Data from animals are so few that ist is perhaps not surprising that no clear picture has emerged. For animals, therefore, the main task for the future may chiefly be to get basic information on the frequency of selfing, and on mechanisms that prevent it in hermaphrodite species, and to discover which of the types of breeding systems known in plants have animal counterparts.
