Having at last brought the writing of this essay to an end and after having carefully read it through, I habe a distinct feelingf of owing the reader, or at least some readers, an apology ot two. I apologize with respect to the manner in which this essay is written, i.e. in a succession unbroken by chapters or headings, returning again and again to the basic theme. The reason for my writing in this manner is mainly historical: this essay has grown during the elaboration and supplementation connected with its translation and scrutinizing. I have thus not been able to divide it into clearly distinct chapters. The only alternatives were, the either to write it anew or to publish it as it hadgradually evolved.
