Stepping stones play a vital role in habitat connectivity, allowing species dispersal and thus contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation and enrichment. In Austria, a national stepping stone program is underway, that focuses on specific areas within forests that will be exempt from regular forest management practices. These stepping stones offer habitats for a diverse array of forest habitat specialists, including saproxylic insects, woodland birds, bryophytes, fungi, and lichen. Within the national program a comprehensive monitoring is implemented, designed in a modular fashion to accommodate both standard and intensive surveys. Standard surveys, conducted across all sites, aim to collect fundamental information on forest structure and readily assessable data.
Trittsteinbiotope spielen eine wesentliche Rolle für die Habitatvernetzung, indem sie die Ausbreitung von Arten ermöglichen und somit maßgeblich zum Erhalt und zur Erhöhung der Artenvielfalt beitragen. In Österreich wird ein nationales Trittsteinbiotope-Programm etabliert, das sich auf bestimmte ökologisch wertvolle Waldflächen konzentriert, die von einer regulären Waldbewirtschaftung ausgenommen werden. Diese Flächen bieten Lebensraum für eine Vielzahl an Waldarten, darunter totholzbewohnende Insekten, Moose, Pilze, Flechten und Waldvögel.
