- AbstractEvolution of conservation agriculture and its impact on soil carbon; Carbon stabilisation by organo-mineral interactions in highly weathered soils; Greenhouse gas balance at the soil-atmosphere interface
The conservation agriculture practised in the tropics and subtropics over the past 3-4 decades has played a significant role in curing soil degradation and establishing a more sustainable agricultural scenario based on no-tillage and improved cropping systems. However, several points still need to be addressed in terms of further improvements in soil management, C sequestration and the mitigation of GHG, either via practical farming systems or scientific research. We believe the current cropping system models based on soybean commodity production can be improved into more sophisiticated crop rotation systems based on crops with high NPP, such as maize or sorghum, that eventually increase the C input into the soil.
