- AbstractImproved soil carbon sequestration in agroforestry relative to other systems; Factors driving soil carbon sequestration in agroforestry systems; Other co-benefits of sequestering soil carbon in agroforestry systems; Barriers to improving soil carbon sequestration in agroforestry systems; Recommendations
In most situations, AFSs store C (especially in deeper soil layers) more efficiently than croplands but less efficiently than forests. Diversified AFSs in terms of tree species are more efficient for SOC sequestration due to the complementarity among species for the use of resources. Regional climate also has a strong impact, with tropical AFSs being, on average, more efficient than temperate AFSs thanks to the higher biomass production and greater soil C sequestration occurring under wetter conditions. SOC sequestration also depends on the type of AFS: in temperate latitudes, literature reviews have shown that silvoarable systems are, on average, more efficient than silvopastoral systems in storing additional C in soils because pastures already have high SOC stocks.
