MARTIN FAUSTMANN’s seminal paper “Berechnung des Werthes welchen Waldboden sowie noch nicht haubare Holzbestände für die Waldwirtschaft besitzen“ was published in the December issue 1849 of the Allgemeine Forst- und Jagdzeitung (Vol 15, pp. 441–455) and has ever since developed an influence on a scientific community that is very hard to exceed and is still ongoing nowadays. FAUSTMANN’s publication is probably the most cited paper ever published in forest sciences. It has inspired eminent researchers, such as Nobel laureates BERTIL OHLIN or PAUL A. SAMUELSON to comment on and discuss topics around forestry (OHLIN, 1921; SAMUELSON, 1976; SAMUELSON, 1983: 488–491) and has led to important further developments regarding the value of forest land and its appraisal (cf. HARTMANN, 1976; BRAZEE and MENDELSOHN, 1988; CHANG, 1998, LI and LÖFGREN, 2000; BUONGIORNO and GILLES, 2003: 156–164 to only name a
few).
