Abstract
ABSTRACT: The number of strategic methods to estimate a prevailing situation in the field is quite large and not well-structured. The majority of these methods is simply based on the avalanche danger level and the slope angle; however, these two parameters are not enough for a comprehensive assessment. Many backcountry skiers obviously neglect the detailed descriptions in the avalanche bulletin and primarily consider the danger level. On basis of an accident in 2009, the different results of hazard assessments are shown: the field evaluation of the guides, the findings of an expert witness (commissioned by the court) and the private expertise which was requested by the defendants.
