Abstract
The influence of gene flow on the structure and evolution of natural plant populations remeins controversial. Much of the discussion has centred around the magnitude of gene flow among populations. Indirect estimates based on allele frequency distributions produce-hogher estimates of gene flow than direct measures based on following despersal units or maker genes. These discrepancies may bei accounted for by the limitations of most experimental designs for quantitavively measuring truly long-distance despersal. Yet, these relatively rare, long-distance events are the most effective in increasing neighbourhood sizes and decreasing population differentiation.
